Anyone who works in the beauty industry will tell you that it’s an inviting, inspiring place, full of empowering women, evolving ideas and new trends rapidly gaining exposure constantly.
For me it all started with a Microblading procedure, eeekk yes! About +- 5 years ago I took the plunge and went for a popular brow trend that just hit the market, I’ve always had pretty good eyebrows, but as I’ve gotten older, the beginning and tail end of my arches started thinning out, and I was really getting tired of filling them in with make-up all the time.
So Microblading it had to be, haven’t heard of it? Microblading is a form of semi-permanent manual cosmetic tattooing that involves using tiny needles stacked in a row (instead of a tattoo device) that make up a small blade to help deposit pigment under your skin. The pigments are implanted in the epidermal layer of the skin. Meaning that the pigment is implanted superficially (If done correctly) and as the skin regenerates, the pigment fades away gradually.
Yes basically I started my career in the beauty industry by actually going for the procedure, It wasn’t the most pleasant experience ever, and also not the worst, it was just meh!
I knew there had to me more, at that point in my life I was a Professional Wedding & Lifestyle Photographer, and yes I made the switch. I went for a super short course in Microblading, it was not the best training. When I think back now, I’m actually shocked at the level of training “trainers” put on the market. Luckily for me I’m a visual learner, so I took to the Internet. I did loads of research and started attending more workshops, courses and masterclasses.
I started building my client base and clients started requesting more procedures.
I eventually finished my training in Cosmetic Tattooing (permanent make-up, semi-permanent, cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation, call it what you want it’s all the same )
So, now I had a more knowledge, experience and a big client base. I started working a lot, on different types of skin (In South Africa we have a huge variety) and especially doing lots of correctional work. (Fixing work done by others) I was loving my work and the procedures, but the results that came back? I took a step back and knew something BIG had to change. I wasn’t happy with the support, training and products that I was using at the time.
Some social media snooping, a lot of research and Swiss Color crossed paths with mine. Two years later, international training, sweat, blood (literally), tears and travelling so much in 24 months that I kept my suitcases packed. I’m finally happy where I am in my career. I have my very own training academy (Mandi Barnard Academy) and I’m a master trainer and distributor of products, pigments and digital devices for Swiss Color International in South Africa. I also offer internationally recognized training courses in Microblading, Permanent Makeup, Paramedical (Areola, Scalp, Camoflage & Derma SR8) Lift Meso Therapy, Advanced Classes, One on One and International Masterclasses.
Working in the beauty industry requires a lot of energy, understanding, and patience. If you don’t like people, Then this is not for you. I’ve learned so much about people, if you understand people and their personalities, you can earn their trust. Once your earn trust, the sky’s the limit.
